Humanities and Arts Research Program

Humanities and Arts Research Program

Targeted funding for creative and scholarly work in the arts and humanities, supporting projects from early development through final production.

The Humanities and Arts Research Program (HARP) supports faculty at Michigan State University working on research, creative activity, and performance-based projects across the arts and humanities.

The program is structured in two phases:

Development
Supports early-stage research and creative work, including projects that may lead to publications, exhibitions, or performances. Funding helps faculty advance ideas with strong potential to enhance scholarly or creative impact and elevate MSU’s reputation.

Production
Provides support for the final stages of completed projects, including book publication, exhibition and performance costs, recordings, and other expenses associated with bringing work to public audiences.

Across both phases, proposals are reviewed within two areas:

  • Humanities Research
  • Exhibition & Performance

Projects supported through HARP are expected to result in work that reaches audiences beyond the university and contributes meaningfully to the broader field.

The program is funded by the MSU Research Foundation and administered by the MSU Office of Research and Innovation.
