McLaren Greater Lansing Opens Hospital in University Health Park

McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital at the University Health Park - Opens March 6, 2022

The Michigan State University Foundation is proud to congratulate McLaren Greater Lansing on the official grand opening of McLaren Hospital, located at the University Health Park.

The new health care campus is now home to a state-of-the-art acute care hospital, cancer center, medical services building, and other facilities that support health care delivery, educational opportunities, and medical research. The main hospital, McLaren Greater Lansing, as well as the Karmanos Cancer Institute, Outpatient Care Center and new emergency department will all welcome patients on March 6, 2022.

It’s been a great honor to partner with McLaren Greater Lansing and McLaren Health Care on this exciting project.  The relationship between McLaren Greater Lansing and Michigan State University spans many decades, and this specific project marks a meaningful moment in MSU Foundation’s continued partnership with McLaren.

While the notion of a replacement hospital had been under consideration for many years, things became serious in 2015, when McLaren Greater Lansing connected with Michigan State University to discuss possible sites within a 2-mile radius of their existing facility. The two sites with the best options were the MSU Foundation’s University Corporate Research Park or MSU’s Spartan Village site.

It was decided that the University Corporate Research Park made the most sense, and in late 2015, planning discussions began in earnest, with the parties drawing up comprehensive development, real estate and strategic collaboration agreements. In addition, the development of the Spartan Forward Fund that is used to further research, increase commercialization, expand joint clinical offerings, recruit faculty, and enhance medical education went underway.

On December 4, 2017, officials gathered at the University Club to make the announcement.  Speakers included MSU Foundation Executive Director Dave Washburn and McLaren Health Care CEO Phil Incarnati among others.

One year later, the official groundbreaking occurred on December 17, 2018 on the site, and construction started that afternoon!

Site History

The land where the hospital now sits was acquired by MSU in the mid 1960s and featured an entomology lab for 20+ years.  In 1988, Michigan State University deeded 110 acres of this land to the Michigan State University Foundation for the purpose of building a research park.  After several early projects from 1989 to 1996, the development at the University Corporate Research Park stalled.

The McLaren Greater Lansing project is the first major development in the park in over 20 years.  The campus was recently renamed University Health Park to better describe the uses occurring in the complex.  The University Health Park is 110 total acres and the McLaren campus within the University Health Park is about 55 acres total.[i]

P3 Partnership

On a national level, the McLaren Greater Lansing project in the University Health Park is one of the largest P3 partnerships in recent times.  According to the Association of University Research Parks, these sites and development projects are key economic drivers across the country and are integrated into regional innovation efforts to create dynamic environments that attract high-skilled, technology professionals to the area.[ii]

Medical School Collaboration

With two medical schools, a nursing school, a veterinary medicine school and a fully integrated academic health center, and MSU Health Care, Michigan State University is committed to safe, high-quality care in partnership with McLaren Greater Lansing.[iii]

In fact, the Lansing area is driving exciting innovations across health care and medicine and medical technology, and we are working with many partners across the region to expand and grow this industry cluster with our strengths in medical isotopes, biotechnology, and medical devices.[iv]

The MSU Foundation affiliate companies Spartan Innovations, Red Cedar Ventures, and the Michigan Rise Pre-Seed III Fund will collaborate with LEAP, Accelerating MedTech program, McLaren Greater Lansing, and Michigan State University to ensure that new inventions and discoveries find their way into the real world through our commercialization practice groups and partnerships.  In addition, we will work with Michigan State, McLaren and LEAP to ensure that we recruit future partners who want to be located in the University Health Park and who can help us attract and grow talent, advance health care through partnerships and build on our success in developing new technologies.

The new McLaren Hospital is now here, and this is just the beginning of expansion and development at the University Health Park. Through our collaboration we intend to revolutionize traditional hospital and ambulatory care settings to build the safest, most efficient health care campus in the world. The campus and the actual processes of care will be designed by nationally recognized researchers, clinicians, nurses, technicians, physicians, the people who support the delivery of health care, and most importantly, the patients.

Congratulations McLaren on this great accomplishment and welcome to the University Health Park!
