TechSmith Headquarters in East Lansing Achieves LEED Silver Certification

Collaboration between TechSmith and MSU Research Foundation results in LEED Certified headquarters facility in East Lansing, reflecting commitment to sustainability and employee well-being.

EAST LANSING, MI — TechSmith Corporation and the Michigan State University Research Foundation are pleased to announce that the TechSmith headquarters building in East Lansing has achieved Silver level LEED certification.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED certification ensures electricity cost savings, reduced carbon emissions, and healthier environments for living, working, learning, playing, and worshiping.

“Achieving LEED Silver is a reflection of our values,” said Wendy Hamilton, CEO of TechSmith. “We want our staff to have the best possible environment for employee wellbeing, collaboration, and creativity. As a hybrid employer where remote work will remain common, we have been very intentional about having a great facility that improves physical health and comfort.”

The TechSmith headquarters earned LEED certification by implementing practical and measurable strategies in areas such as energy and atmosphere, location and transportation, innovation, indoor environmental quality, and regional priority credits. The building’s design concepts started in 2019 with input from employees and underwent significant adjustments to incorporate lessons learned during the pandemic’s remote work era.

The facility features workspaces tailored for purposeful hybrid connections, equipped with state-of-the-art hybrid collaboration technology. This enables seamless integration of remote team members, fostering innovation, collaboration, productivity, and adherence to cultural values. Decisions in the design process were influenced by staff priorities, including maximizing natural light, maintaining a connection to the outdoors, and promoting health and well-being.

“LEED certification is proof that developers have gone above and beyond to ensure their space is constructed and operated to the highest level of sustainability,” said Jeff Smith, Director of Research Parks at the MSU Research Foundation, who was part of the development team. “More than 49,000 commercial and institutional projects are currently participating in LEED, but this is one of only a few in the Capital area.”

The 63,000-square-foot TechSmith headquarters, located at 14 Crescent Road in East Lansing, is a P3 project that aligns with Michigan State University’s strategic plan to help drive economic development. The building was developed by the MSU Research Foundation and sits on approximately five acres of land leased from the University. SmithGroup served as the architect of record, Christman Company as the construction manager, and Pace Howe Design provided interior design services.
