14 MSU Faculty Members Awarded MSU Research Foundation Funding for Work in the Humanities and Arts

Fourteen Michigan State University faculty members have received Humanities and Arts Research Program (HARP) Production Awards for 2023, recognizing their research contributions to creative and performance-based projects in the arts and humanities, supported by grant funding from the MSU Research Foundation.

EAST LANSING, Mich. –– Fourteen Michigan State University (MSU) faculty members have been awarded Humanities and Arts Research Program (HARP) Production Awards for the 2023 academic year. The award acknowledges and supports faculty members engaged in creative and performance-based projects within the arts and humanities. This recognition is facilitated through the Office of Research and Innovation and made possible by grant funding from the MSU Research Foundation.

"The Humanities and Arts Research Program shines as a unique gem among the scientific research and exploration that the Foundation is more commonly known for championing," said David Washburn, Executive Director of the MSU Research Foundation. "It celebrates the profound impact of human creativity, where artistry and scholarship come together."

The 2023 awardees are engaged in a diverse tapestry of explorations. Their projects span from dissecting the intricacies of conflict and societal impacts in Yemen, to illuminating suppressed aspects of Iranian cinema. They also delve into examining the responses of police agencies during the pandemic, amplifying marginalized voices through music and literature, and investigating the convergence of arts and education in STEM subjects. Collectively, these scholars are contributing to a deeper understanding of historical, cultural, and societal dimensions.

"The fourteen exceptional faculty members receiving HARP Production Awards remind us that innovation has no limits," continued Washburn.

The HARP Production awards offer financial support upon research completion, subsidizing the costs of book publication, obtaining permissions for copyrighted materials, CD recording and production, creation and presentation of exhibits, and other expenses associated with producing a complete creative or research project. The HARP Production Awards are one of three categories within the HARP awards, alongside Development and Large-Scale categories.
