MSU Foundation Emeritus Board Member Joan Garety inducted into Michigan State University athletics Hall of Fame

October 5, 2022 – Congratulations to Michigan State University Foundation Emeritus Board Member Joan Garety who has been inducted into the Michigan State University Athletics Hall of Fame.  Garety served a distinguished term on the MSU Foundation Board of Directors starting in June 2005 and ending in 2017.  Joan extended her board leadership through 2019 as a Director of MSU Foundation subsidiary MBI International.

Joan’s fellow honorees included Herb Adderley, Kathy DeBoer, Draymond Green, Lauren Heyboer, Greg Jones, Kalisha Keane, Karen Langeland and Bob Steele.

Originally from Caro, Michigan, Garety played golf at Michigan State from 1974 to 1978.  She was a four-year letterwinner and two-time co-captain and won nine tournaments while leading the Spartans to four-straight Big Ten Conference titles. After her senior season, she was awarded MSU's Dr. James Feurig Achievement and Service Award, the Nell Jackson Outstanding Alumna Award in 1995 and MSU's Scholar-Athlete Alumni Award in 2000.

Joan won two Michigan Amateur Championships, the 1996 Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) Women's Championship as well as the GAM Mid-Amateur Championship.  Additionally, Joan has won five GAM Women's Senior Championships and two Michigan Women's Senior Amateur titles.  She was named the GAM Senior Player of the Decade in 2010 and is a member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame and the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.

Professionally, Joan earned her degree from MSU in accounting and worked as an auditor at Arthur Anderson before spending the bulk of her professional life working for Meijer, rising to Vice President of Finance and Treasurer.

Joan joined the MSU Foundation Board of Directors in 2005 and was instrumental in positioning the MSU Foundation and Michigan State University to achieve success as the Cisplatin/Carboplatin royalty stream wound down. 

During her time with the Foundation, Joan served on audit and grants committees and was instrumental in coaching and advising finance personnel within the organization.
