Michigan State University President Samuel L. Stanley appoints leader to inaugural board seat reserved for MSU Executive Vice President of Health Sciences

EAST LANSING, Mich. –– The Michigan State University Foundation announced today that Dr. Norman J. Beauchamp Jr. M.D., M.H.S., Executive Vice President for Health Sciences at Michigan State University, has been appointed to the organization’s board of directors by Michigan State University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD.

“Having representation from the health sciences on our board further aligns our mission to serve the university” said Randolph Cowen, Chair of Michigan State University Foundation “The partnerships and expansion of health-related activities for MSU across the state has been impressive and we welcome Norm to the board.”

Beauchamp is Executive Vice President for Health Sciences at Michigan State University and is appointed as a Group II director which is comprised of members of the MSU executive team.

“We’ve been intentional over the past several years about aligning education, research and clinical care operations under the Office of Health Sciences,” said Stanley.  “Collaboration with the MSU Foundation will continue to be important as these alignments and partnerships result in new commercialization opportunities.”

In addition to overseeing medical education, research, and clinical care through MSU Health Care, Beauchamp also spearheads Michigan State’s strategic health science partnerships with major health care providers across the state.

“Our mission at MSU to provide health, hope and healing to all, is abundantly evident through the legacy of cisplatin and carboplatin.” said Beauchamp.  “Collaborating with the MSU Foundation to build upon a legacy of treatment that has impacted millions in their fight against cancer is a charge I take very seriously.  I am grateful and honored to become part of the governing body of this important organization.”

The Michigan State University Foundation is a non-profit research foundation that was formed by former MSU President Dr. Clifton E. Wharton in 1973.  As an institutionally related support foundation, it was originally chartered to promote, encourage, and aid scientific investigation and research at the university, assist with patent matters, and perform trust functions for the university’s fundraising organization.

Today, the MSU Foundation is focused on helping Michigan State University achieve its objectives related to economic development through the commercialization of intellectual property created by its faculty, staff, and students. 

The MSU Foundation manages an endowment built from decades of licensing revenue.  In addition to providing over $10 million in research funding to MSU annually, the MSU Foundation collaborates with Michigan State on technology commercialization, economic development and placemaking. 

Through its subsidiary organizations - Spartan Innovations (SI), Red Cedar Ventures (RCV), Michigan Rise Pre-Seed Fund III (MR), and select real estate holdings – the MSU Foundation is a key partner in helping Michigan State University drive economic development across the state.

In the last 8 years, the MSU Foundation and MSU Office of Health Sciences has collaborated on many important initiatives in and around the state including:

  • Working with multiple partners to create an ecosystem for digital health research, development, and implementation across a corridor from Detroit to Grand Rapids and across the state of Michigan.

  • Recruited & facilitated McLaren Greater Lansing to the University Health Park to build a $600M hospital, cancer center and medical office building. 

  • In partnership with McLaren Greater Lansing, established the Spartan Forward Fund to advanced medical education and enhance clinical research.

  • Through MSU Foundation’s venture lab, Spartan Innovations, working with the city of Grand Rapids and the College of Human Medicine on building out entrepreneurial services in the community including the development of a tech incubator facility at the Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building.

  • In collaboration with the College of Human Medicine in Grand Rapids, deploying Business Accelerator Funds and other local discretionary funding programs to assist launching new startup companies based on medical technologies.

  • Expansion of Spartan Innovations successful entrepreneurial Conquer Accelerator program to western Michigan with the College of Human Medicine. 

  • Created the Conquer Accelerator Diversity in Entrepreneurship program which takes underrepresented students from around the state and funds them to work as a team member with some of the most promising startups the state has to offer.

  • Collaborations with 7 major Michigan hospital systems through an annual Health Care Innovations Summit.

  • Working to develop an internal innovations program with Sparrow and McLaren Greater Lansing with LEAP and VentureWell.

  • Launched and funded over 20 startup companies focused on the healthcare space.

Before coming to MSU, Beauchamp held academic medicine leadership positions at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Washington (UW).  He is a nationally renowned neurointerventional radiologist and an influential scientist in stroke, dementia, and health innovation.  At the UW, he was a professor of neurological surgery, radiology, industrial engineering, and systems design.  He also served as department chair, president of the physician practice plan, and chair of the faculty senate.  Beauchamp received his Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University, his medical degree from the MSU College of Human Medicine and his Master of Health Science degree from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.  He completed his residency and two fellowships at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine before joining the faculty in 1996. 

Dr. Beauchamp served on the Board of Directors for the State of Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association and the UW Coulter Foundation for Translational Research in Bioengineering and Chaired the Advisory Board for the UW Global Innovation Exchange.  He was chairperson of the Radiology Research Alliance, the Coalition for Bioimaging Research, and the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology and the American College of Radiology Education Committee.  He is on the Executive Committee of Grand Action II, the Right Place, the Governor’s Commission for Health Information Technology and was the co-founding chair of the Greater Lansing Medtech Advisory Group.  He Chairs the Henry Ford Health MSU Health Sciences Board and MSU Healthcare Inc.
